The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum is a global United Nations (UN) multistakeholder platform facilitating the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines for advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is co-organized by ITU, UNESCO, UNDP and UNCTAD, in close collaboration with all WSIS Action Line co-/facilitators and other UN organizations including; (UNDESA, FAO, UNEP, WHO, UN Women, WIPO, WFP, ILO, WMO, ITC, UPU, UNODC, UNITAR, UNICEF and UN Regional Commissions).
It represents the world’s largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development’ community. It provides an opportunity for information exchange, knowledge creation and sharing of best practices while identifying emerging trends and fostering partnerships, taking into account the evolving Information and Knowledge Societies.
In follow up to the outcomes of the UN General Assembly Overall Review of the Implementation of WSIS Outcomes (Res. A/70/125) and with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Res. A/70/1), the WSIS Forum is continuously evolving and strengthening the alignment between the WSIS Action Lines and the Sustainable Development Goals.In 2019, WSIS will celebrate its 10th anniversary of the establishment of WSIS Forum from April 8 to 12, under the theme “Information and Communication Technologies for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”.
This year, the WSIS summit is taking place from 8th to 12th April 2019; at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva Switzerland.
Why is Uganda participating in WSIS 2019
WSIS 2019 is a high-level multi-stakeholder ICT forum. Through participation in the different sessions as well as networking, Uganda aims to share its experiences and also get knowledge from other participants on best practices, opportunities of partnerships in attainment of the 17 UN sustainable goals and the emerging and trending issues in the global ICT arena like Artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, Digital inclusion and innovation.
WSIS ACTION LINES
11 WSIS action Lines were formulated to guide the WSIS agenda whose primary objective is to bridge the digital divide through leveraging ICTs to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Each of the WSIS lines has a UN Agency that facilitates and coordinates the different stakeholders’ efforts towards the actions therein. The Table below lists the 11 Action lines, their facilitators as well as the sub-themes within each action line- area.

Uganda has so far been invited to take part in 4-panel sessions. These are:P
Mrs Julianne Muheirwe will participate in the Panel organised by American Tower Corporation titled “Innovation 4 Digital Literacy” on 8 April at 13:15 – 14:00 CET,
Dr Norah Mulira will participate in session 8. “Inclusiveness – access to information and knowledge for all”, on Tuesday 9 April, Time: 16:45 – 17:30. Dr Mulira will also be participating in the Artificial Intelligence and Trust Panel that is taking place on Wednesday, 10 April, 15:00-16:30 Room 3&4 CICG,
Mr Enoch Barata Will participate in the Connectivity for Refugees panel session that is taking place on Thursday 11th April 2019 from 9.00Am to 10:45 Am in Popov Room 2
